Day 72: Steamboat Springs, Colorado

August 25th, 2024

Mile Marker: 1548.1

Miles Hiked: 8

We woke up this morning, both having slept well last night. I was so thankful, always so nice to sleep well!

We took our time and headed out around 7:15 AM, it was town day and we only had 8ish miles to get into town.

It was a chilly morning but beautiful with mostly clear skies.

The trail had a small climb then a gentle downhill until we got to the highway to hitch.

We passed multiple trailheads and saw mountain bikers, hikers, and runners all along the trail. Plus people camped out, some just having woke up. It’s always a strange feeling to suddenly see a lot of people at the trailheads but also comforting.

It was easy to see why so many people are out and about around here, it’s gorgeous!

We made it to the highway and realized we were not in a good spot to hitch so we walked along the trail down the highway further down until we felt like we were in a spot people could pull off for.

We stuck out our thumbs at all the passing traffic and my stomach was growing hungry. How come no one is stopping? I figured hitching in Colorado would be easy since it’s such an outdoor world but that was not the case. There was incoming rain clouds and I was hopeful someone would stop before we got dumped on.

After about 45 minutes a car pulls over and a couple picks us up, opening the trunk and knowing exactly what to do.

They were a couple from Colorado and were heading to Steamboat Springs for the day. They had done a large amount of camping and hiking themselves and were familiar with the long thru hikes. While driving to town, the rain started and we were so thankful to be in their car. The couple was so friendly and it was such a joy chatting with them, we so appreciated their kindness.

We then ate at The Egg Restaurant and I had a delicious breakfast. I ordered the apple cinnamon oatmeal pancakes with eggs and sausage. Journey and I also ordered a cinnamon roll that was 10/10 on appearance and 9/10 on taste. It is now number two for the trail cinnamon roll. So gooood!

I mean look at that! Perfection!

After a yummy breakfast we decided to go to the gear store to see if we could find some gear tape for my shoes, the heels are coming apart and tape could hold them together till my next pair. Then we decided to get some new rain pants since mine were no longer waterproof and had multiple tears. Lastly, we got waterproof spray to help enhance our current rain jackets ability.

If it keeps raining, we want to be prepared to stay warm! The cashier at the store told us that September is the best time to be hiking in the mountains. This made me feel more positive about the future. Brown Sugar needs that sunshine! 🌞

Afterwards we went to our hotel at the Legacy Resort and got a spectacular room. I felt like I could stay here for a long time, it had everything you would need for a long stay.

We then did laundry and spent some time lounging and cleaning gear.

Steamboat is a beautiful city! It’s a bit different to be in such a busy bustling city but I can see why so many people are here!

For dinner we went to a Mexican restaurant that was nearby and finished getting things prepped for tomorrow.

Sleepy time. 😴
