Day 123: Taking It Easy

October 28, 2024

Mile Marker: 2920.7

Miles Hiked: 11

We slept in this morning till 7:30 ish. It’s so tough to get out of a comfy bed though. We all took it easy this morning since we decided we would finish on October 31st. This meant we could do 10-12 today, then two 25s then 20ish our last day.

So I spent the morning getting a resupply box, figuring out my food for the next few days, packing my bag, then relaxing.

There wasn’t much to do besides work on blogs so I lounged around and knocked out a few.

Around 1, I started getting rather antsy and we headed out around 2 with plans to stop around 7.

Any time we leave town, regardless of the time, we all feel pretty tired. We walked slow and I chatted with Journey for the first bit. It’s always so nice to get to talk with him as I hike, as if he were on trail with me.

Also, Journey is planning to pick us up at the border and I am beyond excited. This was something Journey was adamant on doing once we decided I would go back to trail.

It was pretty hot today but we were so thankful for the wind that kept us from overheating. The trail took us along the highway for a short bit then along a gravel road and trail for the rest of the way.

We could see for miles and were surrounded by bushes and thorns. Thankfully it wasn’t as bad as yesterday and we didn’t have to bushwhack much.

About 7 miles in we came to a water cache. There are 5 caches along this stretch that get filled by a man named Tim. He does it all donation based and also has a shuttle to pick people up at the border. This section would be so difficult if not impossible without these water caches.

We filled up and headed out for about 5 more miles. The trail took us out on a gravel road for the last stretch which we loved as it was easy hiking.

We then came across a ton of cows as per usual for the CDT. It’s always hilarious walking past them as they stare and shuffle about.

We then started to have yet another beautiful sunset before us. New Mexico has had some of the most beautiful sunsets yet.

7 o’clock rolled around and we went to the side of the gravel road and found a flat spot in between some bushes. The spot wasn’t big enough for me to set up my tent so we all ended up cowboying.

I’m not thrilled to cowboy camp, but I figured it would be easier for tonight. If I can’t sleep good, then I’ll put my tent up the following nights. Ya know, cowboy camping just isn’t for everyone and that’s okay.

Even though we didn’t do many miles, I’m pretty tired.

3 days and 2 nights left! Eee!

Goodnight.
